GIVE YOURSELF THE GIFT OF YOGA
By Ann Katz
heart

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number 1 killer of women over 65 in America.  DON’T STOP READING!  It’s the number 2 leading killer for women between the ages of 45-64 and the number 3 leading killer for women 25-44!  Staggering.  Emery University’s School of Medicine found that an 8 week yoga regimen of heart failure patients reduced markers of inflammation associated with heart failure while also improving exercise tolerance and quality of life (Reuters, 2007).

Svaroopa Yoga® may help your heart (physically and figuratively), lower blood pressure and improve your respiratory system.  It may ease the pain of backaches, headaches, indigestion, reduce insomnia, ease menstrual disorder and reduce the joint pain of arthritis and sinus problems.

None of this even addresses the general feeling of well being Svaroopa Yoga® can provide.  Yoga rekindles a feeling of inner calmness, connection with your Self (that smile from within) and the connection with the larger community.

Want something more in your life?  Give yourself the gift of yoga!

AHHHHH, THE BREATH!

The breath that without it, there is no life. The breath that is so natural and a part of our lives, we take it for granted. The breath is one of the most powerful healing tools in yoga and our lives!

Ujjayi Pranayama is the full yoga breath. It is the sound of the breath in the back of the throat. Prana is the vital life sustaining force; it is our aliveness and the aliveness that permeates and sustains the universe. Ujjai Prananyama, when practiced on a daily basis, soothes the mind and nervous system. It gives you a sense of peace and well-being. It calms and centers both the mind and the body.

This yogic practice is aerobic. It opens up tight breathing areas, which makes normal easy breathing more open and effective. It clears the stale air from your lungs and stimulates the immune system. The slow pace of the breath allows time for the body to absorb the oxygen into the cells.

One of my students, with high blood pressure, committed to doing the practice 20 minutes everyday, and within 3 months, she lowered her blood pressure by 10 points. My personal experience was around severe allergies I had in June. From January to June, I practiced the breath 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening, and my allergies were non-existent. That was 4 years ago, and my allergies have not returned!

Give yourself the gift of a better quality of life! Practice Ujjai Pranayama!
